New Poll: 47% of Young Germans Believe in Hell, 80% of Older Germans Don’t
A new survey of religious life in Germany reveals that nearly half of young Germans believe in the existence of a biblical hell, compared to 80% of elderly Germans who don’t, according to a report in Evangelical Focus.
Christian news agency IDEA surveyed 2,000 people with the question “What is your position on the following statement: ‘I believe that a hell as described in the Bible really exists’” and found:
“47% of those aged between 18 and 29 believe in the existence of hell as described in the Bible….It is amongst those aged 70 and over that the highest proportion of people reject the idea of hell as described in the Bible: only 20% believe in it.”
They further found that independent churches, most of which were evangelical, held the highest agreement in the belief in a biblical hell at 61%, followed by Roman Catholics at 40%, and then lastly Germany’s Protestant churches, such as their Lutheran, Reformed and United churches, at 38%.
Notably, 59% of Muslims affirmed the question, putting them higher than Catholics and their Lutheran counterparts.
