Our call to Prayer
Each day during this call to statewide prayer, we will be sharing a verse about government to guide us in praying. Please read this guide and pray through the scripture that is mentioned. Our commentary is just that – commentary. The word of God stands on its own as a guide to prayer.
“Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.” Proverbs 25.5 KJV
One question we commonly ask those running for office is “Who do you go to for advice?” Interesting answers abound. “My Momma.” “My wife.” “Pastor X.” Frankly, with many candidates there is a lack of good counsel. This is concerning, because when a person is elected to office without good counsel, the results can be disastrous.
When expertise is quickly needed on a subject, an official will often take it in whatever form it comes. If a wicked counselor works their way into the life of an official, the official can be ruined. They won’t know it. Their constituents won’t know it. It will only become evident that wicked counsel is being provided when the official votes wickedly.
Proverbs 25.5 is a very simple verse in meaning. The Geneva Study Bible says “It is not enough that he is pure himself, but that he put away others who are corrupted,” speaking of course, of the king – or, in our case, the elected official.
Any lobbyist who advocates for wickedness is a thorn working against a government established in righteousness. Wicked legislators with experience, laying in wait to influence new legislators work against our state having a government established in righteousness.
As you pray, ask the Lord to bring to your mind wicked influences that might affect our legislators, judges, governor, and mayors. Then pray against those things – and that we might have a government “established in righteousness.”
A Prayer for Day 2 of 67 Days of Prayer
Lord, Your name is known in Unicoi, Carter, Greene, Washington, Sevier, and Blount counties . Thank You for the strong Christian heritage You have given us.
We ask today that You would guide your people in these districts, and in the rest of Tennessee, in voting for and building a government established in righteousness. Father, free the hearts of our elected officials from the influence of wicked counsel. Please insert Godly, righteous counselors into the lives of our elected and appointed officials.
Father, would you cause a spirit of prayer to well up within the citizenry of Tennessee? Would You cause our state to once more seek Your face? Would you cause us to seek Your will as we vote – but not just in voting Lord, but in our daily lives? Would You move on our hearts and make our homes places of spiritual accountability?
Amen.
