Day 1, District 1 – Senator Steve Southerland

Senator Steve Southerland Represents Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, and Sevier Counties. He is the Senate Deputy speaker and the Chaplain of the Senate Republican Caucus. He is involved at Buffalo Trail Baptist Church.

As we begin 33 days of prayer today, it is important that you recall key principals of wrestling. Yes, we are praying. But really, we are wrestling.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6.12, KJV

We are not wrestling with Senator Southerland. We are not wrestling against Senator Southerland. Rather, we are wrestling against “principalities and powers,” “rulers of the darkness of this world,” and against “spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Have you ever wondered about the hierarchy of these principalities and powers? I have. When I was much, much younger, I wondered if the Devil redistricted every 10 years to match our districts. Sometimes when you look at some district maps, you can even wonder if the Devil plays a part in the gerrymandering that takes place in every state of our union. We can theorize and speculate.

There is one thing that we can be confident of however, and that is that the Lord Jesus Christ is Lord of All. The principalities and powers over Cocke, Green, Hamblen, and Sevier Counties are feeble compared to Him.

In the order God’s Kingdom, we know that human life is treasured and we know that marriage is between one man and one woman. It is only in this present time – the time prior to the return of Jesus, that these are questioned. We are probably not in “the” evil day, but the days are often evil enough. As we pray, we can take comfort in the words of the Apostle Paul:

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Ephesians 6.13 KJV

Please pray for District 1. If you’re not sure how to pray, look to the example Jesus gave us with The Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for Senator Southerland. Ask that the Lord would bless him spiritually by increasing his longing for God’s word and presence, and that he would do the same for you.
  • Pray for the physical needs of all of District 1’s Constituents, and that the Lord would provide for believers so that they can faithfully minister to spiritual and physical needs.
  • Pray for women considering abortions. Pray that the Lord would draw them to men and women in His Kingdom who can minister to them. Pray that their babies would be born happy and healthy, experience a full life, and know the Lord Jesus.
  • Pray that Senator Southerland would vote for SB1236 – the Personhood Bill. Pray that he would support the God Given Marriage Initiative.
